BODEGAS ALTO ALMANZORA ESTE 2007, SPAIN
There are 10,000 cases of Alto Almanzora's 2007 Este, a blend of 45% Monastrell, 25% Tempranillo, and the balance Syrah, Garnacha, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon. It is sourced from the little-known DO of Almeria located in eastern Andalucia in the south-east of Spain. The wine was aged for six months in French and American oak. Deep purple in color (remarkably dense for its humble price), it offers up a full-blown nose of smoke, spice box, and wild blueberry. Ripe, succulent, and layered, this bargain-priced, hedonistic effort totally over-delivers. Buy it by the palette load and drink it over the next three years.

Higueruela is made from vines aged between 30 and 80 years with yields of less than 1 ton per acre on average. Vivid ruby. Strongly spiced bouquet of dark berries, rose and violet. BODEGAS PEDRO ESCUDERO FUENTE MILANO 2008, SPAIN
The winery has recently acquired several vineyards planted with old vine Viura, some with vines aged up to 80 years. Grapes were harvested by hand during the first week of October with strict selection of the grapes, which, after reception at the winery, underwent cold maceration for 12 hours and were then lightly bladder pressed to extract the free run juice. The wine (must) underwent slow alcoholic fermentation for 20 days. Afterwards, it aged in stainless steel vats with its lees for several weeks. Stabilization and light filtration occurred before bottling.

HENRY'S DRIVE PILLAR BOX RED 2007, AUSTRALIA
There's a reason the critics love this wine so much year in and year out and that can be summed up in the work "drinkability." "Purple-colored, it exhibits an expressive
nose of spice box, earth notes, blueberry and
black currant. Ripe, sweet and layered, this
nicely rendered red has exceptional balance and length for its humble price." This blend of 65% Shiraz, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Merlot, aged in both French and American oak, offers gobs of rich berry fruit, ample acidity and lots and lots of bang for the incredibly small amount of buck. Drink this awesome value over the next 2-3 years. Pillar Box has a powerful pedigree; fruit sourced from Henry's Drive and winemaking consultation from the renowned Chris Ringland.

Deep ruby. Straightforward dark berry aromas are enlivened by a subtle note of cracked pepper. The palate shows brighter red fruits, with juicy acidity adding lift and bite. Fresh and very easy to drink, with a strong echo of raspberry on the finish. This is a great value.

BODEGAS SABOR REAL JOVEN 2006, TORO, SPAIN
The 2006 Toro was aged in French and American oak, 50% new. Purple colored, it has an excellent, slightly roasted perfume with notes of wood smoke, scorched earth, espresso, and blackberry. Full-bodied, fat, and well-endowed on the palate, the wine has gobs of spicy, forward fruit, excellent balance, and enough structure to last for another 8 years. It is a spectacular value in Toro that totally over-delivers for its bargain basement price. This is one to buy by the case.
The Bodegas was started in 2003 and all of the wines are produced from estate owned Tinta de Toro vines, most of them over 80 years of age.

FINCA TORREMILANOS MONTECASTRILLO ROSADO 2008, SPAIN
Produced from 100% Tempranillo grapes from 15 year old vines.
The grapes are harvested relatively early in the season with the intent of producing a fresh wine with a moderate level of alcohol, so the wine is inviting and lively on the palate. The grapes are harvested and left with the skins for only 1 hour prior to pressing and maintain a bright fruity character.
Delicious on a hot summer day, on a picnic or sipping from the hammock!

MERCEDES EGUREN SHIRAZ TEMPRANILLO 2006, SPAIN
Bright ruby. Peppery redcurrant and cherry aromas are complicated by whiffs of funky smoked meat and cracked pepper. Deeper dark berry flavors are firmed by dusty tannins and become sweeter with air. Finishes with good focus and a repeating dark berry note. This would be nice with a hunk of grilled lamb. Stephen Tanzer, IWC
